Teaching Load

Summer and winter session teaching appointments are not considered part of the regular academic year course teaching load. During summer session, faculty are permitted to teach up to four classes (two maximum in Session I and two maximum in Session II). During winter session, faculty are permitted to teach no more than two courses.

Compensation

Faculty Salary Scale

Faculty teaching in summer or winter sessions are compensated according to a standard faculty salary scale which is approved annually by the Provost’s Office. Salaries are paid by course and are based on the faculty member’s rank and number of course credits.

The approved fiscal year faculty salaries are below.

Download the FY27 – Summer 2026 Faculty Salary Scales

Compensation Schedule

Faculty who teach in the 4 and 6 week summer sessions and the January winter session receive a one-time salary payment through the Division of Professional Studies Office of Summer, Winter & Special Programs (OSWSP).

Faculty who teach in the 8 or 12 week summer sessions are paid twice – half of their total salary is paid mid-way through the 8 or 12 week summer term and the remaining half at the end of the term. Faculty are paid by the OSWSP on the regularly scheduled payroll date nearest to the end of the session.

More information about salary compensation dates is available at Important Dates and Deadlines.

Compensation Limits

The total amount of extra compensation earned at UMBC by faculty on a full-time, nine-month academic year appointment cannot exceed 33.3% of the academic year salary. The time period for calculating annual compensation is from August 23 to August 22 of the following year.

If a faculty member cannot receive direct compensation because of this income limit, the corresponding salary rate may be transferred to the academic department and utilized for conferences, supplies, travel, and other instructional or research purposes at the discretion of the department.

Not-Contracted Courses

OSWSP issues teaching contracts only for summer and winter contracted courses, which are: lectures, stand-alone labs, and discussions. Faculty teaching other courses: independent study, field study, seminar, practicum, research, thesis, etc. are not contracted by OSWSP.

Non-Standard Compensation

Faculty co-teaching the same course each receive half of their regular salary, based on their rank and number of course credits.

Faculty teaching stand-alone laboratory classes (those designated in the course catalog as xxxL) are compensated based on double the number of designated credits, in recognition of the additional contact hours required for laboratory classes. For example, a lecturer teaching a one-credit xxxL lab course would be paid at the two-credit lecturer salary rate.

Faculty teaching multiple sections of a course that share the same primary meeting pattern times are compensated for half of their regular salary for each of the coinciding sections.

Faculty Ranks

Current Full- and Part-Time UMBC Faculty

Faculty teaching in summer or winter sessions are compensated according to their rank. The rank assigned in a summer or winter session is the same rank in effect during the preceding fall or spring academic semester.

Faculty appointed to teach in summer or winter sessions who are pursuing an academic promotion must provide supporting documentation for the promotion to the Office of Summer and Winter Programs.  If the promotion becomes effective before the start of the summer or winter session and documentation is provided before the session begins, compensation will be based on the higher rank.

New Full-Time UMBC Faculty

If a new full-time faculty member teaches in summer or winter session, and the rank has not been previously established, the department chairperson recommends a rank according to established University policies. (Refer to the UMBC Faculty Handbook, Sections 4 and 5.) The academic department must submit a required appointment letter to the Office of Summer, Winter & Special Programs which includes the designated rank of the new faculty member.

New Part-Time UMBC Faculty

“Adjunct I, II, and III” titles are not used in summer/winter sessions.  Academic departments chairs must assign a rank to new part-time faculty appointed to teach in summer or winter sessions. New part-time faculty at the Adjunct I or II level are typically appointed as “assistant teaching professor” (formerly “lecturer”), and the Adjunct III level as “associate teaching professor” (formerly “senior lecturer”) unless their prior teaching experience supports a higher rank or the department chair advises a different rank.  The academic department must submit a required appointment letter to the Office of Summer, Winter & Special Programs which includes the designated rank of the new faculty member.

More information about faculty appointments is available at Hiring Faculty for Summer/Winter Sessions.

Visiting Faculty from Other Institutions

Visiting faculty who teach in summer or winter sessions are customarily compensated based on the rank they hold at their home institution, subject to department chair approval.

Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs)

GTAs are hired during summer and/or winter session only when there is an obvious pedagogical need to substantiate hiring additional personnel for a particular course, typically high enrollment courses or courses with justifiable instructional support requirements.

OSWSP reimburses academic departments for authorized GA course support in Summer Session up to the approved TA stipend amounts. The total OSWSP stipends are the same for 4, 6 and 8 week courses and are paid bi-weekly by the academic department. These stipend amounts are based on the TA academic level (MS or PhD) and whether they are determined to be needed in a part-time or full-time capacity.

More information on hiring TA’s and requesting reimbursements through OSWSP is available at Graduate Teaching Assistant Employment Policy.

Graduate Teaching Assistants Appointed to Teach

Graduate teaching assistants appointed as “instructor of record” for a summer or winter course are compensated at the “instructor” rank. The instructor rank should only be used for graduate assistants appointed as instructor of record. Graduate students appointed as instructor of record and paid at the instructor rank are NOT eligible for graduate assistant tuition reimbursement through the Office of Summer,  Winter & Special Programs.

See the UMBC Faculty Handbook, Section Four (Recruitment and Appointment of Faculty) and Section Five (Offers of Appointment and Appointment Agreement) or contact the Office of Summer and Winter Programs for more information on faculty ranks and appointments.

Faculty Contracts

Faculty teaching in the summer or winter sessions are appointed by academic departments and hired for a single term through the Division of Professional Studies Office of Summer, Winter & Special Programs.

All full-time and part-time faculty who teach during the summer and/or winter session will receive a formal contract of employment that includes information necessary to process payment such as name, rank, employee ID, course information, designated pay date and salary. Each contract includes various appointment duties and policies as indicated on page two of the contract.

The Division of Professional Studies uses an online electronic contract (E-Contract) system to process contracts for faculty teaching in summer or winter sessions.

Summer and winter contracts are sent electronically to department chairs and/or program directors, who review and approve the contracts online. Contracts are then sent to faculty, who accept their contracts online.

It is imperative to sign and submit contracts by the deadline date, which is emailed to faculty each term. Payroll processing and salary payments may be delayed if contracts are not submitted by the required deadline date.

More information about faculty contracts is available on the DPS Faculty E-Contracts page.

Faculty Payroll – Summer/Winter

Full-time faculty who receive a UMBC bi-weekly paycheck throughout the year are compensated for summer or winter teaching through direct deposit or in their regular UMBC bi-weekly paycheck. Pay dates for each session are specified in the appointment contract and are scheduled on the closest pay date to the end of the session.

Part-time faculty, or those who are not on bi-weekly payroll, are issued a pay check or receive a direct deposit on the closest pay date to the end of the session. Pay dates for each session are specified in the appointment contract and are scheduled on the closest pay date to the end of the session. Pay checks are mailed to the current home address on file with HR.

Direct deposit is recommended, as this is the fastest and easiest way to get paid. If you do not want a paycheck sent to your home address, please notify the Office of Summer, Winter & Special Programs at least 48 hours before the pay date to make alternative arrangements.

Address Verification/Changes

To verify your address on file with HR, go to myUMBC and select “Profile” under “Personal Info and Settings.”

To change an address on file, you must notify UMBC’s Office of Human Resources or update online using the Payroll Online Service Center (POSC).

Payroll Online Service Center (POSC)

The State of Maryland provides a Payroll Online Service Center (POSC), which allows employees to review and print online paychecks, year-to-date pay history, and W-2’s. You can also use POSC to manage your W-4 or change your address.

Summer/Winter Session Pay Dates

Pay dates for summer and winter sessions are published through the Office of Summer, Winter & Special Programs and are included on the faculty contract.

Direct Deposit

Direct deposit is available to all summer and winter faculty and is highly recommended for all UMBC employees.  It provides a safe, fast and easy way to deposit your net pay in a designated account and provides the quickest access to funds.

For more information and to sign up for direct deposit, complete the Payroll Direct Deposit Authorization Form.
