Special Sessions Policy Committee

The summer and winter terms at UMBC are also known as “special sessions.” Special sessions are governed by the Special Sessions Policy Committee (SSPC), a committee of faculty members appointed by the Faculty Senate to oversee special sessions programs. The SSPC has adapted various policies for special sessions at UMBC.

Committee Members

SSPC Yearly Meetings

  • Early September: Review and approve winter session course proposals
  • Late December: Review winter enrollments and cancel courses as needed
  • Mid-January: Review and approve summer session course proposals
  • Late May: Review summer enrollments and cancel courses as needed

Cultural Funding Requests

SSPC accepts  and approves (as appropriate) cultural funding requests submitted by faculty  members and other campus organizations. SSPC typically awards $500 – $1000 per  year to support worthwhile campus events. To request cultural funding support, submit a ticket to the Office of Summer, Winter and Special Programs. Be sure to include a brief proposal including event date, amount requested, and program budget.

Dr. Philip J. Landon Special Sessions Scholarships

In honor of the memory of Dr. Philip J. Landon and his contributions to  UMBC’s Special Sessions, the SSPC awards approximately 35 scholarships each  summer and winter to cover the cost of special session tuition.
